Golden, 3 spot and Opaline Gouramis are all colour variants of the same species ( Trichopodus trichopterus). These are popular fish for community aquariums with other medium sized species such as mollies, Angelfish and Barbs.
These Gouramis come from Asia where they Inhabit shallow, slow moving water systems that flood during the rainy season.
Gouramis Benefit from the addition of Decorations in the aquarium but they will also utilise large open areas of space. They feed from the surface and middle areas of the aquarium so they are visible most of the time. Tankmates should be chosen carefully as very large gouramis may eat very small tankmates and males may sometimes be aggressive to similar fish (such as dwarf Gouramis)
Gouramis are tactile feeders and use their long thin ventral fins to “taste” food before deciding to eat. For this reason, a variety of high quality foods should be offered.
Gouramis are part of a family of fish known as anabantoids. This family includes Siamese Fighting Fish and Paradise Fish. All Anabantoids need access to the surface of the water because they breathe air. Males also build a nest made of bubbles at the surface in which they raise their young.
